Ever thought about starting a blog as a way to be creative and possibly earn some money doing it? In this tutorial I’ll share with you the same steps I went through to create a self-hosted WordPress blog and how you can do it too!
What is a self-hosted blog you might ask?
Self hosting means you pay a host company such as Bluehost (which is what I use) to let you use their server space for your blog live on. Basically think of your hosting server as the house your blog lives in and your domain (for example www.JannaNiki.com) as the address to your house!
Now why would you want to pay for hosting over free platforms like blogger?
- You get to own your content!!
- Your blog will perform better in search engines.
- You will have complete control over the customization, look & feel of your blog.
- With platforms like blogger (and even social media like Facebook & Instagram for that matter) you give up the rights to your content as soon as you post.
- This means you have to adhere to their rules and are at risk of them possibly shutting down or changing their terms & conditions/ algorithm on you.
- It can be difficult to make money and monetize on a blog unless it’s self hosted, (due to their terms & conditions).
So if you are serious about blogging it’s worth the INVESTMENT and go self hosted.
Let’s get started!
(This post contains affiliate links, if you make a purchase through the link I make a commission at no extra cost to you.)
Step 1: Choose your Domain and Hosting
Choose your domain name: Picking a blog name / domain name can be one of the hardest things to come up with! You might want to pick something catchy and clever that goes with your niche or like me you can just pick your name.
Step 2: Set it up!
Click here to get started. When you get to the Bluehost site, click their green “get started now” button.
Then select a plan, I would just go with the least expensive one for now.
Here is where you type in your domain, choose wisely! If you already bought a domain from somewhere else you can type it in “I have a domain name”
Then you will be taken to a page where you fill out your information and payment information. If you used my link, then you should be able to score a cheaper package which comes out to $2.65 a month. This is for 36 months which is amazing so you don’t need to think about your hosting again for the next 3 years. You save more per month in the long run by choosing a 3 year package but you can also just also just do the 12 month package if you just want to try out this blogging thing and are not sure how long you want to commit yet.
Step 3: Now set up WordPress
Yay! Congratulations now you have a domain and hosting. Let’s set up WordPress which is the platform you will be using to build and customize your new website. So login to your Bluehost cpanel and scroll to where you see this, and click install WordPress.
Alternatively you can get Bluehost to install it for you, they have 24/7 customer service and would be happy to help you. Be sure to bookmark your WordPress dashboard so that you can access anytime, or you can just type this in to the address bar:
Step 4: Install a theme!
Now the fun part; after all that technical stuff here is your time to get creative! Choose a theme and upload it to your WordPress. There are an abundance of themes to choose, both free and paid. I used a really nice free theme before this one. APOLLO. Here are a few I recommend:
etsy: Yep! etsy has some really fun and unique themes.
Elegant Themes: I know this is a popular site as well.
Step 5: Now what?
Now just start playing around with your theme and getting the hang of WordPress. Bluehost also has some tutorials on how to use WordPress which you can check out here. Once you have it looking the way you want, start posting content and promote it on social media!
